Juniors pumped for WA surf titles

Busselton Dunsborough Times

The best junior WA surfers are preparing for the second round of the WA Junior Surfing Titles at Trigg Beach this weekend.

The three-event series is the most important for junior surfers in WA, as it is the sole means of qualification to compete at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Tasmania later this year.

A strong field of local contestants, plus those travelling from across the State will be looking to build on results from the opening round of competition at Gas Bay in Margaret River.

Male and female divisions being contested will include under-18, under-16, under-14 and under-12.

The South West boasts an impressive new breed of surfers who are hungry for success.

Led by Jacob Willcox, the talent pool includes Margaret River’s Shaun Green, Josh Burke, Hannah Massie and Shaun Manners.

Yallingup’s Duke Nagtzaam, Boston Kavanagh, Kael Walsh and Eliza Greene are also pushing the development of the sport here in WA.

Margaret River’s Jacob Willcox, who won the blue ribbon under-18 and under-16 divisions in the opening event said it was a great time to be a junior surfer.

“I’ve been so lucky this year with the places I’ve travelled to and the waves I’ve been able to surf,” he said.

“It’s been an eye opening experience for me and I’m definitely keen to make the team that heads to Tasmania in December, as an Australian Title is one of my biggest goals for sure.”

After an good run of autumn conditions in the Perth metro area, the forecast for the weekend is looking a little small.

“We’re confident there will be enough push in the swell this weekend to see some nice little waves around,” Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks said.

“It’s not going to be huge, but conditions are looking ideal and will be a good opportunity for the groms to test themselves in smaller waves.”

The Titles are expected to start at 7.30am at Trigg Beach on Saturday with finals on Sunday.
