Joseph Benjamin Wilson Grech refused bail after assaulting and threatening to kill partner in front of child

A Busselton man who allegedly assaulted and threatened to kill his partner in front of their two-year-old child has been refused bail. Joseph Benjamin Wilson Grech, 22, appeared in Bunbury Magistrates Court last week to apply for bail on two counts of common assault, two charges of threats to kill, criminal damage and assault occasioning bodily harm. On December 18, Mr Grech and his partner were out with their daughter getting fish and chips when the pair got into a verbal argument and the accused allegedly threw a chip at the victim. Police told the court the argument then became heated, Mr Grech allegedly shouting at the victim “I’ll kill you before I kill myself”. Later that evening, the accused was returning his daughter to his partner’s mother’s house when he was asked to leave the property, allegedly becoming aggressive towards his mother-in-law, threatening to smash her car, grabbing her by the arm and pushing the her into the wall of the house. Mr Grech then allegedly walked over to the woman’s car and jumped onto the bonnet, causing large dents to the vehicle. When the victim tried to intervene, the man allegedly took out a spray bottle from his pocket and sprayed the woman in the face with an unknown liquid. It is further alleged Mr Grech texted his partner, who was understood to be estranged for a period of time, saying “I’ll murder you before I let you move on”. The man’s lawyer told the court Mr Grech was hoping to receive bail and stay with his grandmother, to whom he is “very respectful.” It was further submitted the family was inquiring into getting the man residency at a rehabilitation centre in Nannup. Police prosecution opposed bail, saying Mr Grech has a record of “violent behaviour” that continues to “escalate” with time. Authorities expressed concerns for the family’s safety, saying the man had “no regard” for their welfare given the offences occurred in front of a child and were worried he would not keep away from either of the victims should he be released on bail. Magistrate Joanne Andretich called the incident “quite serious”, ultimately refusing bail as she was “not satisfied” the man would adhere to any orders set by the court.
