Ironman needs you!
Organisers of the annual army of Ironman WA volunteers are encouraging community groups to sign up to boost numbers for this year’s event.
Pro Busselton’s Ray McMillan said enlisting the help of community groups would fill many of the positions needed to run the December 5 triathlon.
Volunteers were needed every year to pass water and snacks to athletes during the cycle and run legs and help with transition stages.
Mr McMillan said volunteering also provided a social outlet for community groups.
“It’s a way of coming together and having a damn good time,” he said.
Hash House Harriers team captain Robbie Preston and Neville Walton have manned aid stations along with the running club’s members and families since the first Ironman WA was held in Busselton in 2004.
Mr Preston said a group of about 60 had put their hand up to volunteer this year and he believed the event was a rewarding way of giving something back to the community.
“You do get accolades off the athletes, they always thank you when they are on the last lap,” he said.
He said the group made a day of the Ironman WA and cooked a breakfast and lunch for volunteers. To volunteer, register at www.ironmanwesternaustralia.com.
