Wilyabrup winery Gralyn Estate's 2001 Shiraz Cabernet has been awarded five stars and rated third in Winestate Magazine's World's Greatest Shiraz challenge in its September/October issue.

The wine was third in the judges' final top 10, sitting ahead of wines from across the world, including Penfolds' Grange.

It was one of the oldest wines entered in the challenge and had previously won a trophy and four gold medals back in 2003.

Gralyn Estate owners Merilyn and Graham Hutton said the 14-year-old wine was outstanding when it was young and had aged beautifully.

The pair are re-releasing a number of bottles as part of Gralyn Estate's 40th anniversary celebrations this year.

Mrs Hutton said it was a great accolade for the Margaret River region to see a red wine stand the test of time among the world's best wines and highlighted the potential of the industry.
