Football: Mulies take out Onshore Cup
Dunsborough Yallingup Mulies are already plotting next year’s premiership attack after easily accounting for the Bunbury Mulloways in Saturday’s Onshore Cup grand final.
The Mulies defeated the Mulloways 13.9 (87) to 2.4 (16), to finish the season undefeated and secure their ninth straight premiership.
Mulies president and player Andy Mahoney said next year was the 30th anniversary of the club and the competition.
“We think it’s fitting we are going for 10 in a row in our 30th year,” he said.
Mahoney said Leigh Adams was awarded best on ground by the umpires, for his domination through the centre and half a dozen inside 50s.
Mick Sherry, Dave Merry, Jesse Watts and Sam Mansfield were also among the Mulies’ best.
Bunbury midfielder Kurt Haslewood was the best for Bunbury with Clint Masters, James Brown and Luke Mettabone also playing well.
Mahoney said a hard year on the training track after a big pre-season had prepared the Mulies well.
“What won it for us was our superior fitness, and definitely our teamwork all over the ground,” he said.
Mahoney said the season had been their biggest year off the field in his time at the club, especially with their efforts to raise money for the Dunsborough Oval’s new light towers.
“It’s great having (the new oval) compared to how it used to be, especially with the lights, it’s up there with the best ovals in the region,” he said.
Former Harvey Brunswick Leschenault player and Hayward medallist Mick Sherry was recruit of the season for the Mulies.
“He was outstanding all year and has been a great clubman,” Mahoney said.
“He already won the association medal and would be a red hot favourite to win the club medal.”
Mahoney said the “R” word (retirement) had not been mentioned yet but usually came up at the club wind-up, to be held tomorrow from 6.30pm at the Cape Wine Bar.
