Football: Coach calls on Magpie supporters

Busselton Football Club league coach Darian Cheffers is calling for a crowd of more than 1000 supporters to cheer on the Magpies this Saturday night as they take on the South West Football League’s biggest challenge.

In their last home game of the season the Pies will take on ladder leaders and premiership favourites South Bunbury, who have dropped just two games all year.

An exciting finish to the game against Eaton on Sunday saw the Pies come from three goals down in the last quarter, but they fell just short, finishing with a draw.

Cheffers said his players showed intent and endeavour in the last quarter, but lacked some intensity earlier in the game.

“Our boys went out there and for a fair portion of the match expected the breeze to do it all for them,” he said.

“We actually played better into the breeze, worked harder and ran and carried ball.”

Cheffers said he hoped to see the biggest crowd of the year at tomorrow night’s game.

“Anyone who comes to witness the game will see a really fired up, energised Busselton outfit,” he said.

“South Bunbury don’t have a big support base, we really want to give them a hostile welcome.”

Cheffers denied South Bunbury were unbeatable saying “we can see some pretty big cracks in their armour”.

“They’ve got 15 or 16 players that are travellers and they make their locals travel to Perth to train,” he said.

“We want to show them what it means to play for a club you love instead of for a pay cheque.”

Cheffers said a squad of 25 to 26 players would train this week, with selection based on who matched up best against South Bunbury.

“We also want to set up some miss matches in our favour,” he said.

The league game will kick off at 6.10pm tomorrow. See Page 47 for colts and reserves previews and more from the league captains.
