Fishing: Samson snagged at secret spot

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Busselton-born Peter Hinson was thrilled to snag a samson fish on a fishing trip with his family in Dunsborough last weekend.

The keen Cottesloe herring fisherman “tagged along out in the boat with the family” using his 15-year-old Diawa spinner on a glass 12-foot rod which would be 20 years old.

At a secret spot no more than 1km from the Dunsborough townsite, the family rigged up their bottom-fishing gear with fresh squid baits and drifted.

Hinson thought he was snagged until his beach rod started bending under the hull and around in circles.

Thirty minutes later with the old Diawa holding on for grim death he boated a sambo that bottomed out the lip-grip scales.

After the obligatory snaps, the group prepared the fish for a healthy release.
