Researchers are targeting local fishers to help with a landmark study in the Vasse-Wonnerup Estuary.

A Murdoch University team is starting an 18-month project to better understand the movement patterns of black bream and sea mullet in the waterway.

By discovering how the fish respond to different environmental conditions, it is hoped the study can help prevent future fish kill events.

Department of Fisheries community education officer Alicia Reagan said they were seeking local fishers to rod and line fish for black bream at a community fishing day on Saturday, April 5.

“Fishers will assist researchers by catching black bream while Murdoch University researchers fit specially designed acoustic tags to the fish, ” she said.

“This is a great opportunity for local fishers to become directly involved in local research.”

Ms Reagan said they hoped at least 30 fishers would participate and prizes would also be available on the day.

The time and fishing location will be advised upon registration of interest.
