Upcoming aquatic events in the Capes region are not expected to feel the impact of the latest spate of shark attacks in WA, organisers have said.

The Shire of Busselton, which is involved with organising a leavers’ event at Meelup, said existing risk management plans took into considerations the possibility of sharks.

Events co-ordinator Tanya Gillett said the Shire was mindful of the dangers and was still determining if any further precautions would be taken.

Ms Gillett said permits from the Department of Transport were needed for aquatic events which required safety precautions to be put in place.

Ironman sales and marketing managing director Trent Taylor said people had expressed concern but did not believe there would be a negative impact.

“We are working with authorities but we have an existing risk management plan which considers all kinds of hazards,” he told the Times.

Department of Fisheries acting regional manager Michael Burgess said consultation was taking place with organisers, and the new aerial patrols could be fitted in to provide additional precautions.

“A sensible approach would be to have a flyover prior to the race to keep an eye out and report back to organisers,” he said.

“We know there is a low risk (of sharks) and extra resources, if available, should be put in place.”

Surf Life Saving WA community safety manager Chris Peck said surveillance of events were part of the standard operating service for aerial patrols.

“We are aware of events and on that basis when we can provide assistance ... usually by doing a sweep at the beginning of the event,” he said.

Organisers of the Anaconda Adventure Race, which takes place this weekend, said there were safety boats and pre-race course checks in place.

Marketing and media manager Chris Ord said the group would do everything it could.

Participants are allowed to use shark protection measures on their kayaks or bodies and a helicopter, which will be filming the event, would be extra security.
