Never in the 105-year history of the Busselton-Margaret River Cricket Association has a team scored as many runs in one afternoon as Dunsborough did in their A-grade game against Hawks at Margaret River on Saturday.

Led by skipper Chris Reagan (138) and import Callum Loud (130), Dunsborough amassed 3 for 438 from their 50 overs.

Then they dismissed the Hawks for 105 to win by 333 runs.

Only once before in local limited-overs cricket has a side managed to score 400.

That was 16 years ago, when Augusta made 3-425 in a B-grade game against Cowaramup.

Coincidentally, Garrath Stewart, who scored the Association record innings of 249 for Augusta in that B-grade game, also played in Saturday’s record-breaker — this time on the losing side for Hawks.

It was a tough introduction for Chris McLean to the Hawks’ A-grade captaincy.

The Hawks were undermanned, but had quality A-grade bowlers in Matt Kent and McLean, so it was an amazing performance by the Dunsborough team to maintain the huge scoring rate.

The game at Margaret River overshadowed what was supposed to be the highlight of the weekend — the opening A-grade game on the new turf wicket at Barnard Park between St Mary’s and Yobs.

Ben Mattock from St Mary’s had the honour of bowling the opening A-grade over, while Yobs veteran Jock Embry faced the first ball and scored the first run.

Embry was also the first wicket to go, falling to a great leaping catch at gully by St Mary’s captain Marc Ford off Mattock’s bowling.

Ford was playing his 250th game for St Mary’s, while all-rounder Colin Harris was also playing his 250th game for Yobs.

Beefy wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Clarke (32) and skipper Nayton Colombera (33) were the mainstays for Yobs in their total of 152.

In reply, St Mary’s were dismissed for 115.

The condition of the new turf wicket at Barnard Park was always going to be the centre of attention but it gave good consistent bounce throughout the day and wax up to A-grade standard.

One of the highlights for St Mary’s was the all-round performance of newcomer Peter Grygorcewicz.

He took 2-18 and also scored a handy 19 runs.
