Dune conservation takes hold
Yallingup Land Conservation and District Committee have multiple reasons to celebrate, with two important preservation projects taking shape.
An ongoing 12-year dune restoration project at popular surf beach Rabbits Hill is bearing fruit, with native grasses and shrubs planted by Yallingup LCDC volunteers and Yallingup Steiner School students thriving.
“We’ve got some before shots of the dune and it was basically beach sand,” Yallingup LCDC chairman Dennis Cuthbert said.
“We consider the dune to be stable now and it’s just waiting for the vegetation to take off.”
Mr Cuthbert said they would continue planting for the next three years and hoped to maintain the relationship with local primary schools as part of their education program.
Meanwhile, the Yallingup beach-access project to build two new sets of steps at Rabbits Hill and Shallows beaches has been successfully completed.
Mr Cuthbert said the project was funded by CoastWest in association with the Department of Environment and Conservation and replaced old steps at the areas, which had safety issues.
“The Shallows surf beach is one of the most popular in the South West so we’re getting a lot of positive feedback from that,” he said.
Mr Cuthbert said the Yallingup LCDC was working on ongoing projects at Injidup and Yallingup together with the community to maintain the pristine environment.
