Disabled Surfers seek help
Organisers of this season’s final Disabled Surfers event at Bunker Bay are hoping to go out on a high.
Charity president Ant Pursell said he aimed to recruit record numbers for the fun-filled session to be held on March 9.
“We’ve been getting a few more severely handicapped people from Bunbury, which is good,” Mr Pursell said.
“Word has got out and we’ve also been doing the rounds at some of the local schools to get younger volunteers on board.
“A lot of the crew are 55-plus, so it’s been good seeing some new blood join us.”
The non-profit group gives people with disabilities the chance to have a safe, happy and dignified surfing experience.
Numbers have increased since December to between 35 and 55 participants per session, assisted by 55 to 85 volunteers.
Mr Pursell said the group was always looking out for more helpers and no surfing experience was required.
“You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete or even know how to surf to get involved – all you’ve got to do is get into the water and have fun,” he said.
People who want to help set up should arrive at 6.30am, while those wanting to help the participants surf should arrive at 8.30am.
Water, rash vests and sunscreen are provided free, as well as a complimentary sausage sizzle at noon.
