Dig out your big boardies

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Beach fashion will be brought into Busselton classrooms today as a funding drive for volunteer surf lifesavers.

Students at Geographe and Busselton Primary Schools and Cornerstone Christian College will pay a gold coin donation to Surf Lifesaving Australia’s annual Boardies Day kitty in return for being able to wear their board shorts for the day.

Vasse Primary School students have already donned their boardies for the cause and staff at Westpac and Bunnings Warehouse have also thrown their support behind the day and will dig out their beachwear for the day.

Busselton Surf Lifesaving Club president Shane Rabjones said he hoped several new boards could be bought with the money raised from today’s fundraising.

Each board he said cost up to $1400 and the club had 12 small boards which were constantly being “patched up” due to their poor condition.

“We’re relying on second-hand boards from other clubs,” he said.

The extra equipment would help better train young surf lifesavers to save lives in the future.

A sausage sizzle will be held outside Busselton’s Westpac today from 11.30am with the funds raised being donated to the cause.

Money raised went to a statewide fundraising pool and would be distributed to clubs based on their involvement in Boardies Day.
