Capes organisations and businesses are pulling together to raise funds for motor neurone disease research and support.

The MND Drive Southwest Adventure 2016 began its three-day driving tour of the region today and will spend the evening at the Beer Farm in Metricup from 6pm.

The Beer Farm’s George Scott said the team was excited to host one of the convoy’s events, comprising a live comedic music group, an auction, fundraising activities, and food and drink.

“All sorts of things are happening (tonight) … and it’s all for a good cause,” he said.

“We try and lend our venues for good causes as much as possible because anything that’s good for the community is good for us.”

The event, now in its fourth year, takes participants on a convoy-style driving tour to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA.

Next Sunday, the Bay Garden Club will also hold a fundraising event, with all proceeds going to MNDA WA.

Chairwoman Wendy Daw said the club held a fundraiser each year, but this was the first time money was going towards motor neurone disease research.

Ms Daw said last year’s proceeds were sent to a local hospice, but this year funds would go to MND WA in honour of a garden club member’s battle with the degenerative neurological disease.

Three gardens will open at 1 Gale Street at the Busselton Foreshore between 10am and 4pm. The event will also include stalls, morning and afternoon tea, and raffles.

Founder of Darren’s Ride Kirsten Whitby, whose husband Darren lost his battle to MND more than a year ago, said it was incredible to see so many initiatives raising funds for research.

“Awareness really seems to be increasing, which is great,” she said.

“Because the more people who know about it, the more money we can raise for research and the more likely we are to find a cure.”

Mrs Whitby is inching closer to her fundraising target of $25,000, made possible through regular campaigns with clothing chain Blue Illusion, an ongoing art exhibition at Sensations Cafe in Geographe and donations.
