Connor grateful for recognition
Connor Smith has hit his competition for six, winning the Rising Sports Star award for February.
The Year 10 St Mary MacKillop College student started playing cricket when he was four, following in the footsteps of his dad and his brother.
Connor said he enjoyed the sport because of its difficulty, but also the reward when the team succeeded.
“It’s not just physically hard, it’s also mentally tough,” he said.
“You can enjoy success with a group of people.”
Connor is mainly a batsman and said he enjoyed it because of the challenge of not getting out.
“With batting you can only make one mistake,” he said.
Connor said he was surprised to win the award, but was thankful for the recognition.
“You obviously don’t expect to receive an award, but it is always good,” he said.
Connor’s father Noel said he was thankful young sportsmen and women were being rewarded for their hard work.
“I’m very happy for Connor to have won this and got some extra recognition,” he said.
“People play sport for the love of it, but it’s also great that they are rewarded.”
