Clean up this weekend in Busselton

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Volunteers are invited to take part in this weekend’s WA Beach Clean Up along the Capes region coastline.

Now in its eighth year, the cleanup has become an annual event with participants across the State after its humble beginnings as an event in the Capes region.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation’s Heidi Taylor said Australians had a close relationship with the marine and costal environment.

“The WA Beach Clean Up gives everyone an opportunity to give a little back and help improve the health of the environment where we spend so much time,” she said.

Last year close to 8500kg of litter was picked up at 120 spots along the WA coastline.

“Marine debris and litter is a man-made issue ... it is concerning because it isn’t necessary and the impacts are very long term,” Ms Taylor said.

She said the predominant types of litter found along Busselton and Dunsborough beaches were cigarette butts, food wrappers and beverage containers.

Clean-ups will be taking place in a number of locations, including the Busselton and Dunsborough foreshores and Castle Bay, tomorrow and Sunday.
