Canal Rocks bridge battered out of the water

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Unusual weather conditions washed away parts of a sightseers’ footbridge at Canal Rocks last weekend.

A 9m swell reportedly caused the jarrah structure at the Yallingup beauty spot to fall into the ocean.

Department of Parks and Wildlife senior ranger Gilbert Stokman said the viewing platform damage was caused by unusual weather.

Mr Stokman said parts of the platform came off in two separate pieces.

“Our engineers will have a look at it, but I’d say it will require a significant rebuild,” he said.

Mr Stokman said the incident took place during the department’s risk management week where officers assess recreational sites to ensure safety for visitors to the natural wonders.

He said the platform had been around for many years but was in good condition and had been revamped a few years ago.

Mr Stokman said the area would remain closed for repairs and the agency did not know when the site works would be complete.

He said recent unusual weather had caused erosion up and down the coast.
