South West up-and-coming actors are being encouraged to audition for the film Breath, an adaptation of Tim Winton's bestselling novel.

The casting agency, which has also cast actors from the region for recent films Drift and The Water Diviner, are still looking to cast main characters for the film.

Nikki Barrett from Barrett Casting said there has been some local interest from Busselton boys who were on the current shortlist.

"At this stage we are looking for the main characters - the two leads are 15-year-old boys who need to be able to surf," she said.

"We are also looking for a male between 22 and 25 who can surf as well as a really bright and direct 15-year-old girl.

"It is too early to tell where the final choices may come from but we are hoping to find as many local people as possible."

The casting company has previously worked with Sean Keenan from Busselton in the production of Lockie Leonard.

Ms Barrett said acting experience was not necessarily needed and newcomers were welcome.

"People get cast from all sorts of places," she said.
