Busselton’s Army Cadet Unit almost ceased to exist less than a year ago, but it’s back — and it’s coming back strongly.

The 511ACU unit this week came second overall in the State at the Australian Army Cadets Annual Field Exercises in Bindoon and took home first place in first aid.

Two Busselton cadets also became qualified marksmen.

Unit 511ACU secretary Mandy Cant said it was a great achievement for the whole group.

“Of 28 units and about 700 kids, they did really well,” she said.

Unit volunteer mother Lizette Talbot said the unit almost folded less than a year ago, but efforts to revive the group had taken it “from strength to strength”.

“We now have one of the highest recruitment numbers in WA,” she said.

The cadets are now fundraising for upgrades to amenities and an ablution block, unit equipment and upcoming camps.

“We’re getting really active in the community; we’re promoting and accessing new opportunities,” Ms Cant said.

The Australian Army Cadets is a non-profit organisation allowing youth to participate in military-style training and activities.

Ms Cant said the unit taught discipline and respect in a fun, supportive environment.
