Buswell's seat safe

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Vasse MLA Troy Buswell has managed a comfortable win in the State Election, despite a swing against him in the primary count.

The sitting member crossed the line with 57.38 per cent of the votes.

But analysis by the ABC revealed a 4 per cent swing against Mr Buswell as a result of electoral boundary changes.

The redistribution saw the only Labor voting booths in the electorate lost to Warren-Blackwood, boosting Mr Buswell’s margins prior to the election.

However, Nationals’ preferences saw a 3.5 per cent swing in favour of the Liberals on a two-party preferred basis.

With more than three-quarters of the votes counted, the closest contender was Labor candidate Lee Edmundson with 12.15 per cent and the Greens’ Michael Baldock with 9.85 per cent.

The Greens polled well in the western wards, with Mr Baldock’s numbers beating Mr Edmundson at the Dunsborough and Yallingup booths.

Meanwhile, WA Premier Colin Barnett has been re-elected in one of the State’s most swiftly called elections, with a 7.7 per cent swing in the Liberals’ direction.

Analysts predict the Liberals were on course to win more than 30 seats, with coalition partners the Nationals set to win up to eight seats and Labor at least 18, down from 26.

The result means the Liberals could govern in their own right, but Mr Barnett made it clear their coalition partnership with the Nationals would continue.
