The Busselton Jetty is set to feature on high-profile cooking show Masterchef after a “challenge” was filmed on the iconic structure yesterday.

Cape Lodge chef Tony Howell had his skills put to the test, taking on one of the show’s contestants in cooking one of his signature dishes at the end of the refurbished jetty.

Mr Howell said he was approached to take part in the show a month ago after a string of interviews with the producers and chose to showcase the region’s produce in his dish.

His meal was to be blind-tasted by the show’s three judges along with the contestant’s creation.

“It’s tough, it’s hot out here and it’s windy…it’s been a fantastic opportunity,” Mr Howell said.

Judges Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Matt Preston, who have been staying at Cape Lodge with a 70-strong crew, have enjoyed visits to Smiths Beach, where they were spotted swimming, Wyadup Beach to see a sunset and Yallingup Coffee for a drink since their arrival this week.

The group have also sampled some of the region’s food offerings at Must Margaret River and The Goose Café, where Mr Preston and Mr Calombaris were seen leaving after a seafood lunch yesterday.

Mr Mehigan, who hosted yesterday’s film segment, said the region’s produce, including seafood, was one of the appeals of Busselton and would also feature prominently in the show.

“Every product they used (in the show this week) was within 100kms of Cape Lodge. It’s about showcasing West Australia’s best,” he said.

Geographe Bay Tourism Association marketing executive Sharna Holben said the association was not made aware of the Masterchef visit but the show would provide invaluable exposure.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said it was great to see Masterchef in WA.

“The Margaret River region, as one of Australia’s premier food and wine regions, is a perfect fit for Masterchef and the contestants as they try to impress the judges,” he said.

The show is expected to air in April.
