The Busselton Golf Club is set for an upgrade after receiving a $65,000 State Government grant.

The Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund grant will be spent on new toilet facilities and more storage at the club.

Member for Vasse Libby Mettam said it was important to support regional clubs as they played vital roles in supporting community events.

“As the community grows it is important that the clubs grow with it,” she said.

“This is essential in keeping a vibrant community going.”

The club, recently named WA Regional Golf Facility of the Year, is also used as a venue for fundraising and charity events.

Busselton Golf Club president Bill Hilbert said the upgrades would have a positive effect on events the club was already involved in.

“We have a leukaemia fundraiser coming up later in the year,” he said.

“So we have a policy as a club to support fundraising events by offering the venue for free.”

Club general manager Matt O’Connell said he hoped the funding would encourage juniors to play and attract more women to events such as ladies day.

“Golf wasn’t a game for women or even children once,” he said.

“The club needs to evolve to cater for the community”.
