Busselton Boxing Day trots

Busselton Dunsborough Times

The trots are back and on track for a Boxing Day Bonanza on tonight, setting the stage for Busselton Harness Racing Club’s month-long program of evening races at Churchill Park.

Club treasurer Pat Abbott said a strong field of racers were preparing to wow the crowds.

“Boxing Day is usually the best attended in the club’s calendar — we haven’t raced since January 26 this ear, so everyone is feeling excited,” Ms Abbott said.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming outsiders, as well as some talented locals like Michael Callegari, and Tom Marsden, so we should be in for some excellent harness racing.”

The rest of the club’s races are on New Year’s Day — which features a $10,000 cup — followed by January 4, 11, 17 and 25. Gates open at 5.30pm.

The first race is scheduled for 6.40pm and the night will end at about 10.30pm.

Ms Abbott said there would be a family-friendly atmosphere, with plenty to do for kids big and small.

“We’re pretty much the only family entertainment at night in Busselton and we usually get about 3000 people attending each meeting,” she said.

“Apart from all the action on the track, we’ve got a free kids’ bike raffle, great entertainment, tasty food and a well-stocked bar.

“Come and have a flutter if you feel like it and just soak up the relaxed family atmosphere on those balmy summer nights.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming outsiders as we always have a good showing of harness racers from Bunbury and around the region.

Admission is free for under 16s and is $5 for adults.
