Brett Matthew Studders forking out thousands after being caught with “year supply” of magic mushrooms

A Busselton man has been fined $4000 after being caught by police with his “year supply” of magic mushrooms. Brett Matthew Studders was handed down the hefty fine in his absence from Busselton Magistrates Court on Tuesday for two charges of possessing prohibited drugs, having provided an endorsed plea of guilty. On June 17, Studders was observed by police in his car at a well-known Balingup location. When approached by police to search the vehicle, authorities found 483.89 grams of magic mushrooms in the car’s rear left-hand passenger area, as well as 15 grams of dried magic mushrooms in a jar. The court was told Studders was questioned and confessed the hallucinogens belonged to him for his own personal use and said to police: “Oh man, that was my year supply.” Magistrate Tanya Watt handed him a fine of $4000 for the total offending, hoping the sentence would serve as a “general deterrence” to the community. “A general deterrence sentencing is paramount as psilocybin mushrooms have had a significant effect on people in this community and are an issue most prevalent in this area at this time,” she said. Penalties for possessing, manufacturing, supplying, importing or using hallucinogens can range from a $2000 fine or two year prison sentence to $100,000 or 25 years’ jail.
