Big-hearted cyclist takes on lung health challenge

Busselton Dunsborough Times

A Busselton teenager has cycled 12-hours non-stop to raise money for the Lung Institute of WA.

Three years ago Melyssa Flynn was diagnosed with chronic lung disease and an abnormal heart.

With the help of her family, the determined 17-year-old has refused to let the condition to defeat her.

“I was lucky enough to have an early diagnosis and have taken it upon myself to help others,” Ms Flynn said.

“This year my goal is to raise at least $3000 for LIWA not only to help with research but to give other kids my age a chance to have a healthier future.”

Ms Flynn’s mission started at the 3.7km Delirium event circuit in Cowaramup.

She was joined by her parents and her brother Jake who rode for 24 hours non stop solo last year.

Mum Leah said she was proud “beyond words” of her daughter.

“This is a huge physical and emo-tional challenge for Melyssa,” she said.

“It would be tough for anyone, but especially so for her.

“The whole family is just in awe of her positive attitude and determination. We think how she’s handling this is wonderful.”

And for Melyssa, this is only the beginning of her fundraising efforts, as next year she’s going for the 24 hour solo challenge and has vowed to double her fundraising target.
