Bay Ok Day teaching students to better understand our coastal environments

A school initiative educating students on looking after marine environments has celebrated another successful day of programs. More than 700 students from Dunsborough Primary School descended on Geographe Bay for the 2024 Bay Ok Day on November 14. Student engaged in 27 activities presented by environmental groups and agencies to help them better understand the importance of looking after Geographe Bay and the surrounding environment. Dunsborough Primary School principal Taylor Webb said the day was a highlight on the school calendar. “It is such a great day, getting all the students and different environmental groups together to learn about how we can look after Geographe Bay and our local environment,” he said. “The students learn so much about the importance of looking after the bay and really do enjoy the activities.” Highlights included looking at sea life up close through microscopes, exploring GeoCatch’s 3D model of the catchment that simulates pollution and run-off and a marine safety demonstration from the Department of Transport which included a flare demonstration. Now in its 12th year, it is estimated more than 8400 students have participated in the program.
