The Apex Club of Busselton won several awards at the Apex National Convention in Beaufort, Victoria earlier this month.

Busselton was honoured as best Apex club and received a communication award for its information technology and online presence.

Club president Donnetta Blackford said the group had just 12 members and she was proud of the work the club had done in the community.

“We don’t do it for recognition, but it’s nice that our hard work is being acknowledged on a national level,” she said.

“It’s more about the fellowship we share and that’s what we are most proud of.”

Member Alec Ovans also shone bright at the Convention, receiving the national Apexian of the year award.

Mr Ovans said he attended the convention, but was not aware he had been nominated for an individual award. “It was an absolute honour receiving the award, especially when there are so many other great clubs and members,” he said.

“It was also great to meet people and find out what others are doing in their communities.”

The club’s recent projects included an alcohol awareness program for local school students.

Busselton Apex raised more than $4000 to fund 120 students from Years 10-11 to attend the program with the aim of preventing alcohol risk and trauma in youth.

Ms Blackford said the club was looking for new members and urged anyone interested to visit its Facebook page.
