Accolades for youth work

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Five Busselton adult Scout leaders have been awarded certificates of merit by WA Governor Malcolm McCusker for their services to young people.

First Cape Naturaliste Scout Group leaders Rebecca Harris, Peter Everett, Geoff Allen, Lee Herridge and Jenny Stark voluntarily worked with the more than 50 scouts, cubs and joeys from six to 15 years throughout the region.

Mrs Stark said it was fulfilling to be acknowledged in the International Year of Volunteers, for something which continued to be relevant for helping children grow and make new friends in a fun environment.

“I saw a study which showed students in Australia on average spend less than two hours a day outside,” she said.

“It’s largely an outdoor-based program and also really good for kids who aren’t into or suited to competitive sport.”

Activities ranged from cooking to first aid and safety awareness, with the leaders focused on equipping members with practical skills at their own pace.

“The scout message is all about learning by doing,” Mrs Stark said.

“Older kids also teach younger kids, which teachers say is a great consolidation of learning.”

Senior Scout Rowan Stark was also recognised for dedication this month, attaining the highest accolade within his section of 10 to 14-year-olds, the Australian Scout Medallion.

Requirements included planning and completing an expedition hike, organising camps, adopting a leadership role and performing community service over four years.
