Severe thunderstorm and flash flooding warnings issued across Australia
Australians are being warned of severe thunderstorms and potential flash flooding in the coming days, with those on the east coast predicted to take the brunt of the wild weather.
Severe thunderstorms are set to affect Queensland, Victoria, NSW, the ACT and Tasmania in the coming days with heavy rain and damaging wind gusts in excess of 100km/h.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that storms may cause damage to power infrastructure, resulting in blackouts.
Severe thunderstorms on Monday evening are on the cards from central Queensland all the way south to elevated areas of Tasmania, with severe storms most likely developing in eastern NSW.
A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for areas of NSW, in parts of Hunter, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains and Lower Western Forecast Districts.
Parts of north Queensland, the NT and inland areas of northern WA may see severe storms with heavy wind and rainfall predicted.
Severe storms involve heavy rainfall that can lead to flash flooding, damaging wind gusts or large hailstones, with hail already occurring over the Queensland/NSW border region over the weekend.
Heavy rainfall across the coast over the preceding week has resulted in more saturated land, increasing the risk that further rainfall will bring flash flooding and sharp rises in river levels. Residents are urged to prepare for road closures and damage to structures.
On Monday, storms across the east coast are set to subside overnight, returning on Tuesday evening for another round of rainfall.
Similar storm conditions are predicted for Tuesday, with a reduced chance of rain in Victoria and Tasmania.
Those in areas affected by severe storms are urged to keep away from fallen power lines, to keep clear of creeks and storm drains, to stay out of flood waters and call triple-0 in an emergency.
Australians in affected areas are urged to monitor bom.gov.au for severe weather warnings.
