Swimmer wins top gong

Busselton’s sporting community gathered at the Busselton Golf Course on Friday night to celebrate the achievements of up-and-coming athletes and crown the Busselton Freight Service rising sports star of the year.

Twelve young sports stars from a variety of vocations were named as rising sports stars from July to June, but it was swimmer Jasmine Hopkins who took out the overall annual award.

The Year 12 student was unable to attend the event as she was busy training in the US with the Australian swimming team before competing at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis.

Her family accepted the award and $2000 prize money on her behalf.

Runner-up and $1000 prizemoney was awarded to netballer Riley Culnane, while swimmer Maddison Johnston-Walker received the encouragement award and $400 prize money.
