Small South West library wins huge multicultural award at start of Harmony Week

The Shire of Harvey’s War Memorial Library has won the Western Australian Multicultural Award to kick off the start of Harmony Week.
The prestigious award was presented to the shire for the library’s ability to foster a welcoming, inclusive community through its language classes and cultural events.
For more than a decade the shire has offered library-based English classes to help give migrants a place to feel welcome and learn how best to communicate outside their native dialect.
Library special projects manager Ruth Campbell-Hicks said the the initiatives played a crucial role in integrating new residents from diverse backgrounds and strengthening the community’s multicultural fabric.
“I am particularly thrilled for our volunteer tutors, whose dedication and enthusiasm have been instrumental in the program’s success,” she said.
“Communities that embrace diversity and support individuals from around the world create a welcoming and enriching environment for all residents.
“It is wonderful that people have chosen to make Harvey their home, and we value the cultural contributions and connections they bring to our community.”
Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Tony Buti said it was good to have people originating from all over the world bringing their unique experiences and points of view to the State.
“It is important to acknowledge that many of these nominees are volunteers, who are often called upon to serve community members and speak for their communities — work which largely goes unrecognised but makes a vital difference,” he said.
