Police charge driver, 35, over pursuit through several suburbs, with police car allegedly hit in the chaos

A 35-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly led police on a dangerous pursuit, hitting a police car and driving onto a footpath before his arrest in East Perth. Police say the 35-year-old man was behind the wheel of a white Great Wall dual-cab utility when officers tried to stop the car on Harris Street in Carlisle about 1.40pm on Friday. Officers followed the car but lost sight of it near the Perth International Airport. It is alleged the car was later seen in Welshpool but police once again lost sight of the car. Then, about 7.40pm, police say the car was again spotted by officers in the carpark of a hotel on Mill Point Road in South Perth. “As the Great Wall utility left the carpark, its alleged it hit another vehicle parked in the carpark,” a police spokeswoman said. “The utility entered the Kwinana Freeway. “Just after 8pm a police vehicle activated their emergency lights and sirens to pull the vehicle over, and again the driver allegedly failed to stop. Due to the manner of driving by the driver of the utility the pursuit was aborted.” It is alleged the vehicle then travelled into the Perth CBD and into Victoria park where the car allegedly hit a police car, causing damage to the ute. However, it is alleged the car continued — driving through bollards and onto a footpath, causing further damage to the vehicle. The alleged pursuit ended about 8.45pm when police say the driver lost control of the car, which came to a stop on Bennett Street near Bronte Street in East Perth. The driver was taken into custody and the car was impounded for 28 days. Police have charged the 35-year-old, who is of no fixed address, with a string of charges, including failing to stop for police, reckless driving to escape pursuit by police, failing to correctly affix and display a number plate, and three counts of stealing. He is due to face Northbridge Magistrates Court on Saturday.
