Guns have been found inside a car torn to shreds during a fatal crash at a major intersection in Perth’s southeast, 7NEWS understands.

The destroyed Holden Commodore ute and damaged Toyota LandCruiser tray-top collided on Albany Hwy at the entrance to Tonkin Hwy in Gosnells just after 10.30am on Monday.

The Commodore driver, 39, suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

“It was very very confronting,” one witness said of the crash site.

A 68-year-old man driving the LandCruiser received minor injuries and was taken to Armadale Hospital for medical treatment.

Police said the crash came just minutes after Police Airwing had spotted the Commodore travelling on Albany Hwy.

Sources told 7NEWS reporter Jerrie Demasi the Holden driver had made threats to harm himself before setting off in the car.

The driver was pictured on dashcam almost side-swiping another vehicle at a Kwinana Fwy exit before pulling into oncoming traffic.

It is understood the driver had guns on him, with officers seen bagging up what appeared to be two rifles at the crash scene.

Police say there is nothing to suggest that he deliberately crashed his vehicle.

What led to the crash and the police response is now being investigated.

“As an investigation is now underway, we have no further details for release at this time,” A WA Police spokesperson said.

The fatal crash closed Albany Hwy between the Tonkin Hwy northbound entry and Page Rd, with traffic diverted.

Those closures have now been cleared, Main Roads WA said in an update just 3pm.
