Nominations for the annual Goldfields Sports Star of the Year Awards have been extended until 5pm Friday.

Award officials have urged sporting clubs and organisations to recognise their high-achievers by lodging formal nominations covering the sporting period from October 1, 2023, to September 29, 2024.

Presentations will be made to the sport star of the year, rising star, service to sport, masters sport star, team of the year and person with a disability.

This year’s presentation on November 16 at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall will mark the long-running event’s debut on a Saturday night.

The awards have been presented on a Friday night since they were resurrected in 2002 after an absence of nearly 20 years, but have been moved to avoid a clash with various summer sports.

The gala evening includes the Goldfields Sporting Hall of Fame’s 2024 inductees.

Inductees include two-time eight-ball world champion Jack Halligan, who died in July aged 70.

At the height of his powers, Halligan claimed the 1993 world title, emerging from the week-long championships with a winning average of 88.89 per cent — and claimed world player of the year honours again in 1995.

He was for many years the last surviving member of three of the world’s greatest pool exponents who each hailed from Kalgoorlie-Boulder, alongside Walter Lindrum (died in 1960) and Bob Marshall (died in 2004).
