Local star Connor Fewkes grabbed a sixth men’s title and Abbie Teasdale carded a decisive victory among the women’s field in last weekend’s annual McDonald’s Kalgoorlie Goldfields Classic.

Fewkes went on with the job after shooting a three-under 69 on the first day for a three-shot lead.

His win backed-up previous successes in 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023.

Fewkes, who is also WA captain, last month earned Australian selection for the second time, ahead of October’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Japan.

He debuted for Australia at the same event last year, where he finished in a tie for 48th.

Teasdale (140) easily grabbed the women’s trophy from Louise Carson (181).

Last weekend’s event drew 128 players.

The classic is now in its 47th year, but the dynamics have changed significantly through the years.

It was traditionally a winter tournament, but later switched to early spring to accommodate the WA PGA Championship at the local course.

Up until 1992, the classic attracted a star-studded field of professional players, but became a strictly amateurs-only tournament in 1993.

Terry Gale was the inaugural winner in 1977.
