Push for country club in Vasse

Suggestions for a proposed country club for Vasse and the surrounding areas will be welcomed at a public meeting later this month.

Vasse and Districts Community Centre committee members Neil MacDonald and Dennis Scott are looking for feedback from the wider community about a proposal to create a central club for sporting activities and a club house.

The pair started discussing the idea about a year ago but now wanted to find out what the wider community needed and if they believed there was a need.

Mr MacDonald said there had been interest in a bowling green, croquet lawn, tennis courts and even a skate park.

He said an 8.5ha parcel of land off Pries Road, adjacent to the Bussell Highway in Vasse could be a good position for the club as it was zoned for sport and recreation.

The public meeting would not make any final decisions on the club, but just see if there was support in the community for the proposal and to set up a committee for it.

“We are just looking to the future,” Mr MacDonald said.

The Busselton Shire Council had been informed about the proposal.

It was in the process of completing a review of its sporting facilities in the shire.

Community Development manager Maxine Palmer said council staff had started a needs assessment with the users of Churchill Park and would be talking to the users of Bovell Park next.

“These needs assessment will establish each clubs current and future needs based on their forecasted growth rates and goals for the future,” Mrs Palmer said.

The process was expected to take until the majority of the financial year.

Mr MacDonald said he didn’t believe the club would duplicate existing facilities and the growing Vasse community and its surrounds supported the extra facility.

He said the club could be a home base for the Vasse cricket team and the junior soccer and rugby groups.

Mr Scott said the land was ideal for the proposal at it was off the main road, with good drainage, space for parking and footpath access.

The meeting will be held at the Vasse Hall on September 27 at 7.30pm.
