Fundraising, brick by brick

Busselton Dunsborough Times

The brick wall outside a Dunsborough cafe has become a colourful mosaic reflecting the community support being built for the region’s surf lifesaving fraternity.

Since Hot Chocolatte organised a buy-a-brick fundraiser for the Smiths Beach Surf Club in December, more than 350 of the 500 bricks, on offer for $5 or $10, have been sold.

Cafe owner Donna Keelty said the $3000 goal had been reached, with “overwhelming” contributions from individuals and families and some local businesses donating up to $50 for their logo to be drawn on their brick.

“It’s quite amazing how it has really captured our town’s generous spirit,” she said.

“One of my employees, Rennie Sansom, was the brains behind the fundraiser with surf clubs in her blood. She felt it was great for our young ones to have the same fun and ability to learn about the surf as she did.”

Ms Keelty said drawing of the logos and quirky tags was the domain of fellow employee and hobby artist Jessie McCamish.
