A wheely good turn out expected

An increase in traffic of the non-motorised variety is expected on Friday as children and their parents participate in WA’s 2013 Ride 2 School Day.

Together with its national equivalent, the event encourages active choices and physical activity as a means of commuting to and from school.

Dunsborough Primary School expects a big turnout after more than 200 students took part in the “walking school buses” initiative last week.

Sustainability leader Helena Nicholson said as well as cycling or walking, students could also use skateboards or scooters, with the effort geared towards the school’s ongoing promotion of sustainable living which also flowed onto air quality.

“Active kids are healthy kids,” she said.

“Active transport also reduces the amount of cars on the road and carbon emissions. We also use it as an opportunity for education about road safety.”
