‘Whites run’ for migration of western rock lobster set to begin this week, according to DPIRD

Experts from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development have predicted the “whites run” for WA rock lobsters will come early, with it expected to start this week. DPIRD scientists are estimating the lobsters will move into deeper waters from Wednesday, November 20. According to DPIRD, higher ocean temperatures can cause the lobsters to move into deeper waters. Research indicated the temperature is 1C warmer in the shallows, causing the lobsters to move sooner. DPIRD principal research scientist Dr Simon de Lestang said baby lobsters were a key indicator for the research. “The number of puerulus (baby lobsters) measured four years earlier is the strongest influence on the whites run, which occurs when the three-and-a-half to four-year-old immature lobsters start to move out to deeper breeding areas,” he said. Part of the process saw the baby lobsters change their shells from red to a light pink or white shell, to better blend with the sea floor. Fewer lobsters are expected to make the journey this year, following a strong season in the year previous. Dr de Lestang said the lobsters are generally easier to catch, making them popular among fishers. “This is a popular time of year for recreational fishers, because while the whites are walking, we estimate they are three times more catchable, hiding in pots during the day while they’re migrating,” he said. “Commercial fishers also eagerly anticipate the whites run, because it generally coincides with the approaching festive season when seafood and especially rock lobsters are always popular choices.” DPIRD said the migration is expected to continue into February, where demand for lobsters increases due to Chinese New Year.
