New data forecasts cases of dementia to more than double across Greater Geraldton within next 30 years

Projected cases of dementia across Greater Geraldton will more than double over the next 30 years, according to alarming new data. Studies by the National Centre for Monitoring Dementia (NCMD) at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) show there are an estimated 42,000 people living in WA with dementia in 2025, which is expected to rise to 87,000 by 2054. An estimated 692 of those cases reside in the City of Greater Geraldton. Ranked 29th on the list of dementia prevalence within WA local government areas, Greater Geraldton will see a suspected increase of up to 103 per cent with 1407 diagnoses in 2054. Across the Mid West, cases in Morawa, which is ranked 72nd on the prevalence list, are expected to increase from 15 to 29 by 2054. Northampton and Irwin have shown similar forecasts, with expected increases of 92 per cent and 93 per cent respectively. In Carnarvon, an increase of 92 per cent is projected by 2054, with diagnoses sitting at 74, expected to rise to 142. Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, with provisional data showing it will soon be No.1 as cases are expected to double within the next three decades without significant intervention. The research shows across Australia an estimated 433,300 people are living with dementia, expected to rise to 812,500 by 2054 — a projected jump of 88 per cent. “Dementia Australia’s research clearly shows that there has been a sustained and profoundly concerning lack of awareness and understanding about dementia in the community – with many Australians mistakenly believing dementia is a normal part of ageing,” Dementia Australia CEO Professor Tanya Buchanan said. “Dementia Australia is calling for critical investment from the Federal Government to support a national conversation on brain health, combined with more targeted and effective supports for people impacted by dementia. “Taking this dual approach will ensure we are working towards reducing the impact of all forms of dementia.” An estimated 1.7 million people in Australia are involved in caring for someone with dementia, and at least half of people living with dementia reside in permanent aged care facilities. Dementia is the term used to describe the symptoms of a big group of diseases which cause a progressive decline in a person’s ability to function. People diagnosed with dementia suffer from loss of memory, rationality, physical functioning, social skills and intellect. There are many types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia and Lewy body disease. Dementia is not a typical sign of ageing and can happen to anyone, however it is more prevalent in those aged 65 or over.
