Sporting clubs are likely to emerge from the State election as big winners regardless of the result after Premier Roger Cook revealed a re-elected Labor Government would spend $2.8 million to upgrade Geraldton’s rundown netball facilities.

The promised boost for the Geraldton Netball Association would see $2.5m put towards creating a new indoor court, $250,000 for lights on the outdoor courts — allowing for resurfacing to take place at the same time — and $61,000 for much-needed large fans at the indoor court to improve player and spectator comfort.

Labor’s announcement comes after the Liberal Party pledged $2m to boost netball facilities in Geraldton if it wins the March 8 election.

The city’s netball facilities are ageing and at capacity, with 10 outdoor courts and one indoor court used by more than 1900 members from eight clubs each week, including teams from Dongara and Northampton.

The association also regularly hosts local primary schools and year-round competitions for the community.

In Geraldton on Friday, Mr Cook said he hoped this funding would bring Mid West communities closer and create more sporting opportunities.

“Sporting clubs are the lifeblood of our local and regional communities, bringing people together and providing opportunities to stay active and engaged,” he said.

“We want every West Australian to have opportunities to participate in sport and recreation that they enjoy.

“WA Labor has invested unprecedented amounts in community sport and local infrastructure and we look forward to continuing on that record if re-elected.”

Another Labor election promise has been $3m to upgrade GBSC Sports Park in Spalding to benefit clubs and help attract more women to sport.

The Liberals have pledged $1.5m to go towards building a cricket hub in Geraldton.
