Dogs named Bella and cats named Milly are apparently the most common in Geraldton.

The City of Greater Geraldton revealed the top names for cats and canines in town last week, with Bella the most popular name among the 8830 dogs registered with it.

Coco and Milly were the most popular names for registered cats in the city.

The reveal comes as the city urges the community to register their pets before October 31.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said registering pets was an important step to ensure the wellbeing of beloved furry family members.

“Registering your pet with the city as well as making sure your address and contact details are up to date ensures that if your pet is found by the rangers, it can be quickly returned to you at a minimal cost,” he said.

“Those who have recently relocated to the area can exchange their current registration tag for a City of Greater Geraldton one free of charge.”

Under both the State Government’s Dog Act 1976 and Cat Act 2011, cats and dogs must be microchipped and registered with their local government authority.

All dogs over the age of three months must be registered, microchipped and wear a collar with a registration tag. The same applies to cats over six months of age, who must also be sterilised.

Animals can be registered via the city’s website or over the counter at both the civic centre and Mullewa District Office.
