Cyclist faces charges over alleged carjacking and police pursuit in Perth’s south

A cyclist has been charged over a brazen carjacking and police pursuit before crashing into a tree in Perth’s south. Police allege the 23-year-old man began the rampage on Tuesday around 4.50pm on Campbell Road in Armadale, approaching the driver of a Nissan Pulsar on a bicycle and brandishing a knife. “It will be alleged the accused was armed with a knife and threatened the driver, who exited the vehicle before the accused drove away with the victim’s car,” a WA Police spokeswoman said. It was not until 6pm that officers in Armadale spotted the Nissan on Harber Road and a chase began. “Police immediately activated the emergency lights and sirens on the unmarked police vehicle and tried to block the path of the car,” the spokeswoman said. “It will be alleged the accused drove the car over a verge and around some low fencing and onto Harber Road in Armadale.” After driving through Armadale, Haynes, Kelmscott, Camillo and Champion Lakes, police said the man lost control of the car before it hit a tree on Railway Avenue, Kelmscott. The man was arrested at the scene and now faces six charges including armed robbery, reckless driving to escape pursuit by police and driving in possession of cannabis offences. He will face Armadale Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
