Flood warnings are in place for parts of NSW after the state copped a drenching overnight receiving more than 100mm of rain.

In the past 24 hours, 110mm of rain poured down in Coffs Harbour and further north 90mm fell in Lismore.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a flood warning for the Bellinger River in Coffs Harbour, which is expected to rise throughout the day flooding parts of Thora and Bellingen.

A flood watch is also in place for other parts of NSW including the Northern Rivers with 60-80mm of rain expected on Saturday, residents have been advised that could quickly turn into a warning.

Damaging winds are expected to lash the mid north coast of NSW all the way up to the Queensland border, with Byron Bay already hit by 100km wind gusts overnight.

Warnings are also in place from Port Macquarie up to Brisbane with huge swells causing erosion along the coast.

The wild weather has been caused by a low pressure system off the NSW coast creating destructive winds and huge waves reaching heights of 8.6m, according to weatherzone.

In capital cities, Brisbane will escape the worst of the weather receiving up to 25mm of rain which should ease by the afternoon.

Sydney avoids most of the heavy rain with lighter showers expected in the morning and afternoon reaching a high of 20C.

Melbourne scored perfect conditions for the AFL Grand Final and will be dry and sunny all day, reaching 23C.

Similar conditions are expected in Hobart.

Perth will reach a high of 18C, with a chance of showers in the morning and cloudy skies for the remainder of Saturday.

Showers are developing in Adelaide with north-westerly winds up to 30km, with the city reaching a maximum of 25C.

Canberra will be dry and cloudy reaching a high of 19C in the nation’s capital.

Darwin will be hot and cloudy reaching a high of 33C, showers are expected in the afternoon.
