South West soccer players will kick off the action this weekend, with Football Margaret River hosting a pre-season carnival at Western Oval.

The 29th annual Margaret River Soccer Carnival will have about 28 teams competing in the two-day round robin tournament in men’s, women’s and masters divisions. Games will be played from 9am-4pm on Saturday and from 9am-noon on Sunday, with the grand final at 2.55pm.

Football Margaret River’s Gary Leigh said teams would travel from Perth and across the South West including Busselton, Dalyellup, Australind, Bunbury, Mandurah, Albany and Peel.

“We have a fellowship with many of the teams, some of whom have been attending since the beginning of the competition,” he said.

Leigh said FMR was looking forward to the event, despite only winning the men’s division once in the carnival’s 29-year history.

He said the event was expect to attract about 500 people to Margaret River for the weekend.
