Call on Kelly to save the floodgate

Vasse MLA Libby Mettam has written to Water Minister Dave Kelly this week after it was recommended that an “essential” and heritage-listed floodgate on the Carbunup River be ripped out.

Ms Mettam, pictured, wrote about her concern over the potential removal of Lennox Weir after the Water Corporation brought a proposal to Parliament last month saying the floodgate no longer served any function.

Made up of a concrete base, metal columns, and a series of removable timber boards, the significantly deteriorated Lennox Weir has separated salt and fresh water in the river since 1928.

Less hub is more

Early community feedback has indicated the Busselton residents could be more content with a smaller performing arts centre if it means a smaller budget impact for the city council.

Last week, the City of Busselton council agreed to reject the tenders received for the potential Busselton Performing Arts and Convention Centre because of the lowest coming in $13 million over the $24m budget.

The City will instead consult residents to have their say on whether the potential state-of-the-art facility should go ahead.

Festival of films for everyone to enjoy

Community enjoyment will be a large focus of this year’s CinefestOz film festival, with an extensive array of free screenings set to take place across the South West.

Playing host to four films and the Cinesnaps Short Film Competition finalists in Bunbury, Busselton, Dunsborough, Margaret River and Augusta, the popular community screenings event is set to be a highlight of the week-long festival.
