Rotting whale carcass to stay: DBCA

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions says no action can be taken on the whale carcass that sparked a shark warning after washing ashore near popular surf spot Three Bears earlier this week.

The carcass was reported by the Surf Life saving WA helicopter patrol on Monday but with the state of decomposition, the species cannot be confirmed.

A shark advice was issued, prompting surfers —— many of whom are spooked by increased shark activity in recent weeks — to call for action.

However, a department spokeswoman said because of the location and level of decomposition, it was not possible.

Vasse MLA Libby Mettam relayed surfers’ concerns to Environment Minister Stephen Dawson.

A ministerial staffer told the Times Mr Dawson would review Ms Mettam’s letter.
