Marathon places to go fast

Registrations are expected to sell out quickly for the fourth year of the Margaret River Ultra Marathon, with entries now open for the May 1 event.

Following record-breaking numbers at the 2020 postponed event, organisers expect the running community to again embrace the picturesque course.

Rapid Ascent general manager Sam Maffett said the event was fast becoming one of the most popular Australian ultras.

“After many big races were cancelled due to COVID-19 this year and with people staying closer to home, we expect the 2021 event to sell-out for this truly spectacular course,” Maffett said.

The massive 80km course boasts a mixture of beautiful scenes and hard work as the Hamelin Bay to Wilyabrup trail winds through karri trees, beaches and bluffs.

The course is designed to test physical limits and Maffett said this was the best part of ultra running.

“No matter if you’re part of a team, an accomplished ultra runner or first timer, the event offers everyone a chance to be part of an incredible experience and to etch their name in the ultra running history books,” he said.

Yangebup runner Adrian Third competed in a team at the 2020 event and said signing up inspired him to “train for something good”.

“It was really challenging and something I’ll never forget, along with the many of the other runners I met along the way,” Third said.

Just a stone’s throw from wineries, cafes, and surf beaches, the course is reported to be an event for everyone.
