Grant provides aviaries for possums

A Lotterywest funding grant of $16,000 will assist FAWNA with its work caring and returning western ringtail possums to their natural habitat.

South West MLC Adele Farina said with about 200 possums coming into FAWNA care each year, the funds would provide new aviaries to house the endangered species at the new possum “finishing school”.

Ms Farina said the finishing school would conduct “vital rehabilitation work” during a strategic pre-release program.

“In Busselton and other areas in the South West, we are fortunate to have endangered western ringtail possums living in our backyards or at least frequently visiting our backyards,” she said.

“Habituating in urban areas, however, makes our western ringtail possums susceptible to illness and injury which is why the efforts of FAWNA volunteers are so important.”
