Geographe Primary School students will be working towards a greener future in 2020 after the school received a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant.

The school was selected out of 1000 applicants in the national program, which aims to fund projects focusing on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices and enhancing native habitats. Geographe Primary School will use the $1000 grant, and some remaining State Government funding, to create a science garden.

Deputy principal Judy Kealy said they wanted to establish a vegetable garden where students could explore biodiversity, sustainability and the notion of paddock to plate through hands-on activities.

“The vegetable garden will be part of a larger redevelopment of an under-utilised area into an outdoor classroom with a sensory garden, wheelchair accessible pathways, amphitheatre-like seating and garden rooms for children to sit, read and talk,” she said.

We want to bring the teaching of biodiversity and sustainability outside with real-life learning opportunities for our students.

“The planning, creation, planting and maintenance of this garden will be incorporated into the Science, Technologies and Gifted and Talented programs, which are part of our curriculum.”
